Insanity. Chaos. A sea of people. Beer. Frites. Color. Sand. Elbows. The Cyclocross World Championships were all that and more. That’s what happens when you pack 53,000 people in a small area, with lots of beer tents and cyclocross racing in West Flanders, Belgium. You think you’re prepared after attending World Cup races in Belgium and even the World Championships in Germany, but Koksijde took it to a whole other level – for the racers and for the media. Here are some of the obstacles that we had to overcome.

On a tough course in Koksijde, Belgium, only one American, Ryan Trebon, survived the blazing speed to finish on the same lap as the winner of the Cyclocross World Championships. He finished in 18th place.

Tough day for one of the pre-race favorites, Katie Compton at the Cyclocross World Championships in Koksijde, Belgium on Sunday. The goal was the rainbow stripes for the American who has come so very close in the past but she had to settle for fifth place.

Albert Leads Belgian Crush At Cross Worlds

In front of a record crowd, 53,000 fans, the Belgians crushed the Elite Men’s race at the Cyclocross World Championships in Koksijde on Sunday when they took the first seven spots at the finish. At the front, with his second rainbow jersey of his career was Niels Albert who led from start to finish.

Vos Dominates Cross Worlds

Prior to the Elite Women Cyclocross World Championships, we asked ‘can anyone beat Vos?’ The answer was a clear no on a cold, grey Sunday morning in Koksijde, Belgium. With a huge crowd, getting bigger every lap, Marianne Vos of the Netherlands, took over the front of the race halfway through the first lap and went on to win her fifth Cyclocross World Championships, and her eighth World Championships in all cycling disciplines – all at the tender age of 24.
