Current World Time Trial Champion, Lisa Brennauer (Velocio-SRAM), describes the art of time trialing as a passion.
“I just like the whole feeling of the time trial,” said Brennauer. “I love when you are on the start ramp. Some people do not like this. I like watching the clock run down. You can show how hard you have been working and to let everything out in the race. It is such a big mental game. You need to know the course really well. You have to be focused, to show in this limited time what you can do. Everything has to be perfect for you to win. These factors make it exciting for me. I am a little nervous at the start but it is a good nervousness. It only makes me go faster. It’s more that I am very prepared. I know the course, to take every corner right. It’s about aerodynamics and technique. It’s being a perfectionist. That is me. I love to work on the little details. I know what I can do.”
“In the time trial I am so focused on what will happen next. I am looking ahead. I am really busy with the details of the race itself. That’s why I call the time trial my passion”
“It was great to win,” Brennauer stated about winning the World Time Trial Championship last year in Ponferrada. “I knew during the race that I felt good plus I was getting information from the radio. I thought during the race that I had a shot at a medal but I never thought that was winning. There was a climb at the end. I made up some time at the last 5K. After I found out I won I was speechless and started crying. I achieved a goal that I set for myself. Wearing the World Champion jersey has been very special.”
Brennauer was also part of the Specialized-lululemon team win in the Team Time Trial World Championships and remarkably two days after the ITT, she added a silver in the World Road Race Championship.
She raced in the Amgen Tour of California Women’s Race earlier this week and will be racing in the Women’s Individual Time Trial Empowered with SRAM tomorrow. The race has been moved to Santa Clarita due to the forecast of snow and low temperatures at Big Bear Lake.
“I have not raced in the US. I have been in America for training camp but I have never been racing here. It’s exciting. I think it’s special that this race is happening.”
