Leah Kirchmann of Optum p/b Kelly Benefit Strategies clocked the fastest time, winning the Canadian time trial title and the highly sought after Red and White jersey in the elite race at the 2014 Global Relay Canadian Road Cycling Championships on June 26.
The events took place on a difficult and rolling 28.8-km course which started in Val Racine, QC.
Kirchmann won the race with a time of 43:30. Jasmin Glaesser (TIBCO/To The Top) came in second place less than three seconds slower than Kirchmann and took first place of the U23 standings while Anika Todd (TIBCO/To The Top) finished in third place.
“It’s feels incredible. I am excited about winning [the jersey]. Time Trial has been a huge focus for me this year. I spent a lot of time on my bike, and I tried to do as much time trial as possible. I am very happy to see it’s paying off,” Kirchmann told CyclingCanada while proudly wearing the Maple Leaf jersey after the race.
“I previewed the course a few days ago. It’s quite a difficult course with the climbing right off the start. Since its 30km/h, I knew that pacing would be a big factor in this race. It turns out I paced it well in the climbs, and was able to recover in the descents.”
Glaesser tweeted, “Close one in the TT yesterday, just 2.5sec off the mark! Been 4, 3, 2 now in that order, liking the math for next year!”
Glaesser’s teammate and neo-pro Alizee Brien placed fifth in the overall Elite standings and finished in second place in the U23 race. Gabrielle Pilote-Fortin (Équipe du Québec) was third in the espoirs.
