This week the UCI released their road race calendar for the 2014 season with no major changes compared to last year’s schedule for races in the United States and Canada. In the United States, the men have eight UCI races for a total of 33 days of racing and the women have two days of racing on two one-day races. In Canada, the men have five UCI events offering 15 days of racing while the women have three races for three days of racing. Of note, the 2014 UCI Criterium Calendar is not available yet, and will be analyzed in a future post.
In 2013, Mexico had one UCI race on the America Tour Calendar but the Ruta del Centro does not appear on the 2014 schedule. There are no UCI races for women in Mexico.
Let’s take a closer look at the UCI road calendar for each country.
USA. The 2014 UCI calendar added one race for the men and women in the United States, the one-day Winston Salem Cycling Classic in April. The only other race on the calendar with both men and women’s field, ranked UCI, is the The Philadelphia Cycling Classic in June, which is now ranked 1.1.
Races ranked *.1 or *.HC are typically by invitation only, and limit which teams can participate in that event, meaning that amateur teams (teams that do not hold a UCI license) cannot race in these events. This means, that domestic/amateur teams only have the possibility of racing at three events in 2014.
Other changes include the extra day for the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah, now up to seven days long. Very vocal in the media about their issue with the new scheduling, publicly stating that their race would cease to exist if Utah was granted the extra day, the Tour of Elk Grove is still listed as a UCI stage race for the men – not for the women.

Canada. The 2014 schedule in Canada sees a new race added to the women’s list of events with the Tour de Delta White Spot race which was added as men’s UCI race in 2013. The other two women’s races are Grand Prix cycliste de Gatineau and the Chrono Gatineau in May. Also, Canada still has the only Nations Cup race, for under-23 men outside of Europe with the three-day Coupe des nations Ville Saguenay.
