UCI road races in USA and Canada in 2013

Posted on 26. Sep, 2012 by in news

The 2013 UCI calendars include a total of 19 races in the United States and Canada,  including 14 races for elite and under-23 men and three race for the elite women.

America Tour (men). The 12 non-WorldTour UCI races for elite and under-23 men in Canada and the USA are part of the bigger 33-race America Tour calendar which includes races in South and Central America. The two new races in the calendar this year are both in Canada, the Tour de Delta and the Tour of Alberta.

Certainly not new to pro riders, the Tour de Delta, in existence since 2001, will for the first time be included in the UCI calendar on July 7, 2013. The event is part of BC Superweek, Canada’s biggest cycling series, which also includes the Tour of White Rock and the Gastown Grand Prix. In 2011, two criteriums and a road race made up the Tour de Delta, it is unspecified at this point which race will be on the UCI Calendar. Ranked as a 1.2 event, the one-day race means that UCI Pro Conti and Continental teams can participate as well as national teams and regional/club teams (aka amateur).

The six-day Tour of Alberta scheduled for September 3 to September 8, 2013 was created by retired Canadian cycling star Alex Stieda who is working with an Edmonton group to bring a UCI stage race to Western Canada. Stieda was the first North American to wear the yellow jersey at the Tour de France, in 1986 in a pro career that spanned 15 years. According to The Province, Stieda stated that the Tour of Alberta already has a funding commitment of about $2 million from the Alberta government and the event will need about $5.5 million in total funding. Ranked as a UCI 2.1, the race is opened to UCI ProTeams (max 50%), Pro Conti and Continental teams as well as national teams.

Other changes include the renamed Philly race, from TD Bank International Cycling Championship to American Cycling Classic with a lower UCI ranking. ProTeams are not eligible to race at the now 1.2 event in Philly, downgraded from its 1.HC previously; only Pro Continental, Continental, national and regional/club teams can participate.

The other returning races on the America Tour calendar for elite men include the Tour of the Battenkill, the Tour of the Gila, Amgen Tour of California, Tour de Beauce, Tour of Elk Grove, Tour of Utah, USA Pro Challenge and Bucks County Classic. The only Coupe des Nations event outside of Europe, the Coupe des nations Ville Saguenay returns  for a sixth year for under-23 men. Though there was talk of adding an extra day to the Tour of Utah, the stage race remains at six days on the 2013 calendar.

WorldTour. The two Canadian races, the Grand Prix Cycliste de Québec and the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal return for another year on the WorldTour calendar.

Women. Out of 83 total number of UCI races for Elite women, only three take place in Canada and the USA. The 2013 schedule lost one race, the Liberty Classic in Philly. The Chrono Gatineau and Grand Prix cycliste de Gatineau, both in May in Canada, return with  a ranking of 1.1 meaning that mixed teams are not longer eligible to race. The  five-day Exergy Tour also returns with a higher ranking, listed as 2.HC which doesn’t exist in the published UCI road rules. One can assume that the 2.HC is the same as 2.1 ranking as far as eligible teams, which means UCI teams, and regional/club teams.

Junior. The UCI calendar includes two races, both in Canada, for junior riders. The six-day Tour de l’Abitibi returns for the junior men, while the junior women have the one-day Grand Prix cycliste de Rimouski.
