Greg Van Avermaet‘s sixth-place finish led four BMC Racing Team riders in the top 20 of stage 2 in the Amgen Tour of California, but two of their teammates – Steve Cummings and Steve Morabito – weren’t as fortunate due to a crash in the final five kilometers.
Stitches To Cummings’ Knee. Cummings and Morabito were among a half dozen riders who hit the pavement as the 188.5 kilometer race sped toward its conclusion at the Cabrillo Community College campus. Both managed to finish, but Cummings injured his left wrist and needed three stitches to close a gash in his right knee. Morabito sustained severe road rash to his left elbow and shoulder, BMC Racing Team Dr. Eric Heiden said. “With Steve Cummings, he hurt the wrist he broke six weeks ago,” Heiden said. “So my concern is whether he can hold the handlebars. We’ll have to see how he feels Tuesday morning.”
Peter Sagan (Liquigas-Cannondale) won his second straight stage while Van Avermaet was in the top 10 for the second day in-a-row. Three of his teammates Brent Bookwalter (12th), Tejay van Garderen (15th) and George Hincapie (17th) were also in the top 20 in the same time as Sagan.
