With US Cross Champion Katie Compton (Rabobank Giant) at a cross. everyone expects to take the front and power away for the win. And that’s what she did at day two of the Cincinnati3 Cyclocross Festival but on a sunny day at neighborhood Sunset Park, Compton waited before putting in the deadly acceleration.
One of the great features about this three day event in the Ohio River Valley is that each day brings a completely different course in a new venue. Saturday’s course utilized every inch, or so, of a neighborhood park with a lot of cornering around trees and numerous short ups and downs.
French National Champion Caroline Mani took another holeshot and hit the gas, lining up the field behind her. Compton was happy sitting in seventh wheel and watching what was happening in front of her. By the end of the first lap, Sue Butler (River City Bicycles) had taken over the front of a five-rider group which was separating itself from the rest of the field. Behind Butler, were Mani, Meredith Miller (CalGiant), Kaitie Antonneau (Cannondale-Cyclocrossworld.com) and Compton. A few seconds back, trying to catch on were Georgia Gould (Luna) and Kathy Sherwin (Stans No Tubes).
Butler kept the pressure on, getting a few bike lengths to the group which now included Gould but the move was quickly shut down. Then Miller, who had taken the front, bobbled on a corner hitting a root which forced her to expand energy to chase back on. With four laps to go, Mani and Butler got a separation. And Compton reacted. Up on her pedals, she moved up to the front of the chase group and then close the gap down to the duo ahead, went to the front and kept on going.
That was it. Compton powered away to another solo win.
Mani and Butler, once again, escaped the other riders and battled it out to the finish where Mani’s cornering skills were enough for her to nab second ahead of Butler. Antonneau outsprinted Miller to take fourth in the next group.
