Team USA for Road World Championships

USA Cycling announced today the roster 31 riders that will represent the United States at the 2011 UCI Road World Championships, Sept. 19-25 in Copenhagen, Denmark. The short list for Team Canada was announced last week.

Quotas for Worlds. Quotas for each country were a few weeks ago. Ranked 8th in the UCI WorldTour Classification, the USA will be able to field the maximum of nine starters in the Elite Men’s road race, six  in the Elite Women road race and  five starters at the U23 Men road race. Ranked #1, the United States can start six riders in the Junior Men road race and four in the Junior Women road race. For the time trial, two riders can represent the USA.

The USA roster includes many of the nation’s top young talent as for the first time the junior time trial and road race events will be combined with the U23 and elite races in Copenhagen.

Representing the United States in both the elite men’s road race and time trial will be 2010 USA Cycling Professional Time Trial National Champion Taylor Phinney (BMC Racing) who will be joined by another neo-pro Andrew Talansky (Garmin-Cervelo) in the race against the clock.

Joining that pair for the road race will be six teammates including Tour de France stage winner Tyler Farrar (Garmin-Cervelo) and 2011 pro road race national champion Matthew Busche (Team Radioshack), both automatic selections. 2010 pro road race national champion Benjamin King (Team Radioshack), Timmy Duggan (Liquigas-Cannondale),  Brent Bookwalter, Jeff Louder (both BMC Racing) and will also contest the road race.

National champion and automatic nominee Evelyn Stevens (HTC-Highroad) will team up with 2008 Olympic gold medalist Kristin Armstrong (Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY12) in the elite women’s time trial.

As one of the top 25 ranked elite women in the world rankings, Amber Neben (HTC-Highroad) joins elite road race national champion Robin Farina (NOW and Novartis for MS) as automatic nominees to the elite women’s road race squad. Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Colavita/Forno d’Asolo) and Shelley Olds (Diadora Pasta Zara), along with the time trial participants, will complete the six-woman squad.

Joe Dombrowski (Trek-Livestrong) is the sole automatic nominee to the U23 men’s squad by virtue of his top-three finish at the recent UCI 2.2-rated Giro Ciclisto della Valle d’Aosta. Espoir Paris-Roubaix bronze medalist Jacob Rathe (Chipotle Development) will join him in the road race, along with: Robert Bush (Chipotle Development), Gavin Mannion and Ian Boswell (both Trek-Livestrong). A combination of two of the three from Trek-Livestrong,  Lawson Craddock, Carter Jones or Nathan Brown will contest the time trial.

As national champions in the road race and time trial respectively Alexey Vermeulen (Prochain) and Kristo Jorgenson (BYRDS) secured their spots on the junior men’s world championship team. Colby Wait-Molyneux (Hammer Nutrition-CMG Racing Team) will automatically join Jorgenson in the time trial via his ITT win at the Tour de l’Abitibi earlier this summer. As discretionary nominees junior strongmen Alex Darville (Echelon Santa Barbara), Paul Lynch (Hot Tubes Development Cycling) and Matthew Lipscomb (Greenville Spinners Bicycle Club/Hincapie Development team) will also contest the road race.

Junior women’s time trial national champ Grace Alexander (BYRDS) and Addy Albershardt (NOW and Novartis for MS), fresh off of Track World Championships, will compete in the junior women’s time trial and will be joined by junior women’s road race national champion Alexis Ryan (Team TIBCO II) for the road race.

The 2011 UCI Road World Championships will begin in Monday, Sept. 19 with the junior women’s and U23 men’s time trial contests.
