Amaran, Kirchmann Move Up NRC Standings After Tour of Elk Grove

The overall win at the Alexian Bros Tour of Elk Grove propelled NRC defending champion Luis Amaran (Jamis/Sutter Home) and Leah Kirchmann (Colavita/Forno d’Asolo) to the top 3 of the NRC individual standings with four events left on the calendar.

Though Francisco Mancebo (Realcyclist.com) did not race at Elk Grove, he remains on top of the men’s individual standings. With a second-place in the third stage at Elk Grove, Jake Keough (UnitedHealthcare) trimmed 49 points off Mancebo’s lead. Amaran jumped from tenth into third place in the standings, at only 46 points from Keough.

The Bissell team still leads the team classification, with 176-points on UnitedHealthcare. Jamis/Sutter Home remains in third place, only 258 points behind UnitedHealthcare. Team Exergy and Realcyclist.com continue to alternate between fourth and fifth places. Team Exergy now sits in fourth, holding a 195-point cushion on Realcyclist.com.

In the women’s individual standings, Janel Holcomb (Colavita/Forno d’Asolo) remains on top with a 235-point lead. Her teammate Kirchmann jumped from eighth to second spot. Erinne Willock (Team TIBCO to the Top) moved into third place, pushing Amber Neben (HTC-HighRoad) down one spot. Second overall at Elk Grove, Anne Samplonius (NOW and Novartis for MS), who was ninth in last week’s standings, make her way into the top 5.

Colavita/Forno d’Asolo’s lead in the team standings in unassailable. The squad holds a 1,003-point lead over second place Team TIBCO to the Top.

The next event in the NRC is the Grand Cycling Classic, a criterium for women, in Grand Rapids, Mich., on Aug. 20. It will be followed by the Chris Thater Memorial, a criterium for men and women in Binghamton, N.Y., on Aug. 27-28.
