In the team competition, Colavita Forno D’Asolo bested Team TIBCO/To The Top by almost 500 points, even though Women’s Prestige Cycling Series individual champion Erinne Willock rides for TIBCO. Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12 finished third.

“Colavita Forno d’Asolo prides itself on teamwork and it’s fantastic to be able to add the Women’s Prestige Cycling Series to the list of team GC wins this year,” Colavita Forno D’Asolo Director Rachel Heal said. “Leah Kirchmann is definitely proving to be one of the rising stars of Canadian cycling and winning the sprints competition is a great testament to her sprinting ability.”

Willock won the series individual crown despite missing the SRAM Tour of the Gila, one of the four races in the national-level cycling competition solely produced for women, by women. But recovery from a broken scapula, suffered while racing in Europe, didn’t stop her from coming back strong. She finished second overall at the Nature Valley Grand Prix, the penultimate event of the series, and secured the title with fourth place at the Bend Memorial Clinic Cascade Cycling Classic last weekend.

“Winning the title is a really nice bonus,” Willock said. “I’ve been racing strong all year. I had a really good Redlands, and I felt great heading over to Europe. It’s unfortunate that I was injured and missed Gila. But I came back with good form after the injury, and I’m really glad that I was able to do well at the last two races. All the races in the Series are big and I’m happy I was able to do well at all the ones I participated in.”

Willock came back from her injury in mid-May at the GP Gatineau.

“We’ve been able to rely on Erinne at every race she’s contested this year,” said Team TIBCO Directeur Sportif/Manager Lisa Hunt. “She has always been a consistently strong performer and it’s nice to see her rewarded for her efforts with this title.”

With her victory overall at the Cascade Cycling Classic, Colavita Forno D’Asolo’s Janel Holcomb finished second to Willock in the individual standings. Former Olympic and world time trial champion Kristin Armstrong (Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12) was third.

In the best young rider standings, Kasey Clark (Primal-Map My Ride) edged Rachel Warner (Missing Link Coaching Systems/Specialized) and Rushlee Buchanan (Colavita Forno d’Asolo).

The eighth season of the Women’s Prestige Cycling Series began with the Redlands Bicycle Classic in California (March 30-April 3), continued at the SRAM Tour of the Gila in New Mexico (April 27-May 1) and closed with the Nature Valley Grand Prix in Minnesota (June 15-19) and Bend Memorial Clinic Cascade Cycling Classic (July 19-24) in Oregon.
