Clocking the fastest time of the 14-mile (22.5-km) Skyliners Time Trial put stage winner Clara Hughes (Cycling BC) and Francisco Mancebo (RealCyclist.com) into the yellow leader’s jersey at the BMC Cascade Cycling Classic today with three stages to go.

Starting at 30-second intervals – with the final 10 at 60-second intervals – the riders faced a 7-mile climb on a bumpy road to the turnaround point to fly back  to the finish line at Summit High School.

Clara Hughes (Pactimo) was also the fastest at the Tour of the Gila TT

Women. Canadian TT Champion Hughes smoked the field, with a time of 32:44, besting Kristin Armstrong (Peanut Butter & Co Twenty12) by 20 seconds.  Erinne Willock (TIBCO) was third, at 23 seconds down. Fastest last year, Willock beat her own time by 2:49 on the same course.

Leader into the stage, Kristin McGrath (Peanut Butter & Co Twenty12) finished 1:15 down to slip down to fourth on GC. Rushlee Buchanan (Colavita/Forno d’Asolo) remains the Best Young Rider with a 44-second lead on Jasmin Glaesser (Cycling BC).

Will Hughes and her team be strong enough to defend against both TIBCO and Peanut Butter? She holds a lead of 13 seconds on Willock and 20 on Armstrong going into another tough stage with a mountain-top finish. Starting at  Wanoga Snow Park,  the 71-mile (114-km) stage 3 goes up immediately  and ends with the long climb up Mt Bachelor, with a finishing steep kicker.

Men. Once again, Mancebo is in yellow at an NRC race. The NRC leader stopped the clock at 29:05, over than two minutes faster than last year’s winning time.  In second is Tom Zirbel (Jamis/Sutter Home) at 21 seconds  with Jeremy Vennell (BISSELL) at 34 seconds for third.

RealCyclist.com stays in the GC lead shuffling the top 2. Mancebo now leads with 49 seconds on leader into the stage, his teammate Cesar Grajales. Vennell is now in third, one slim second off Grajales. Zirbel jumped to fourth at 54 seconds down.

Lachlan Morton (Chipotle Development) continues to lead the Best Young Rider competition with a slim six-second lead on Carter Jones (Trek-Livestrong).

The battle for the final yellow jersey continues tomorrow with the 84-mile (135-km) Cascade Lakes Road Race with its first tough climb 15 miles into the stage for the first KOM culminating with the trek up Mt Bachelor for the finish.

The time cut of 120% of the winner’s time was enforced, putting 10 riders out of contention in the men’s race and three in the women’s field.
