The second day racing at the St Francis Tulsa Tough continued where it had left off, with more attacks. After a few laps of shuffling and re-shuffling at the front for positioning, the speed started to ramp up and Now-Novartis for MS made its move sending Anne Samplonius off the front. The reaction was swift from Primal/MapMyRide who shut it down. And it continued that way with both teams sending riders off the front, often joined by Vanderkitten-Focus riders.
A few times, ace sprinter Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom) also made the break, testing her legs and her opponents’ legs and not against making into a break herself. But anymore that contained the veteran sprinter was quickly reeled in. A $850 crowd prime revved up the pace even more with van Gilder sprinting full on to win the mullah. Immediately a counter went with her teammate Kristen LaSasso and Emily Kachorek (Primal/MapMyRide) but that was also short-lived.
Just like yesterday, Kori Seehafer (Team Type 1) in what she called her ‘retirement fitness’, waited to the halfway mark before launching her first attack. Her teammate Jackie Crowell countered when the move was brought back and was off solo for a few laps. It looked like the expected bunch sprint was going to happen with the field all together at five laps to go, but Crowell thought otherwise. With two laps to go, the 2009 U23 National Champion launched another solo attack which the field was slow to respond to, the organization was just not there. With one to go, Primal/MapMyRide led the chase but there was not enough horsepower to catch the solo rider while savvy Seehafer was blocking and helping out her teammate the best way she could.
Crowell kept her head, not looking back as she powered from the final corner, the field breathing down her neck. No time for celebration until after she crossed the line. A few seconds later, van Gilder who made her way into the Primal/MapMyRide train, took the field sprint for 2nd ahead of Tiffany Pezzulo (Primal/MapMyRide). Day 1 winner Pezzulo, took it easy on Saturday night, surfing the back of the field before making her way up to contest the final sprint; she remains in the lead of the omnium with 8 points on van Gilder.
Racing concludes on Sunday afternoon with the technical Riverview Criterium, with the short but challenging climb, known as Cry Baby Hill and right-hand hairpin curve in a residential neighborhood. The women start at 2:10 pm and race for 60 minutes.
