Kelly Benefit Strategies-OptumHealth Pro Cycling is fielding a veteran roster for this weekends Philadelphia International Championship. With a combined 60 years of professional racing experience split among the eight-man roster, the team will be making a push for the podium at the oldest and longest running one-day event in America.
The roster features seven out of eight riders coming off a strong showing at the USPRO Road Race Championship; riders peaking after over three months of racing in Asia, Europe, and the United States. Performance Director Jonas Carney, a participant at Philly from the director’s seat and on the bike, knows the challenge inherent in the course, which features ten trips over the Manayunk Wall, a punishing steep, angular half-mile kicker.
“Having raced and directed here, I know that this course is no walk in the park,” said Carney. “That hill can be absolutely unforgiving and the race will almost certainly be blown apart because of it.”
Carney and Performance Manager Jake Erker will both accompany the team to the event. Erker looks to the many seasoned climbers on the roster to step up.
“Guys like Baj. Creed and Donald have been known to have some huge rides at races like Philly,” added Erker. “Cando and Jesse are coming off of a long block of tough stage racing, and have been climbing exceptionally well. Jesse was a threat for the KOM jersey at the Tour of California this year, and his efforts at the USPRO Road Race prove his fitness just continues to grow.”
