Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Colavita Forno D’Asolo) won her second consecutive decisive sprint at the City of Redlands Criterium, stage 2 of the Redlands Bicycle Classic, this afternoon. Jen Purcell (Danbury Audi) finished in second and Chloe Hosking (HTC-Highroad) in third.

The real race drama was happening in the GC race. At the bonus time sprint lap Samantha Schneider, Alison Powers and Meredith Miller (Team TIBCO-To the Top) lined it up on the front to put Erinne Willock and Carmen Small in position to grab a few seconds and move up the overall. The move worked, with Willock and Small taking 2nd (3 seconds) and 3rd (2 seconds) in the sprint. Willock finished the race in the front group with Cliff-Ryan, while Evelyn Stevens (HTC Highroad) finished 8 seconds behind in the second group. The gap plus time bonus put Willock up to 2nd overall ahead of Stevens and 11 seconds behind race leader Amber Neben (HTC Highroad). Small moved up to 4th place on the GC standings.
With only seconds separating the top three. The race is sure to be animated in tomorrow’s Beaver Medical Group Sunset Road Race. The women will ride 68 miles that includes the challenging Sunset Loop.
A few riders went down today. Powers crashed today, broke her arm and elbow, and is headed to surgery on Sunday. Jennifer Weinbrecht (Vanderkitten-Focus) also had to get medical attention and her condition is unknown at this time. We wish both a speedy recovery.
Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Colavita Forno D’Asolo). “This is a great feeling. I have never done this before in a NRC race. The team was awesome today. The team rode up in front making sure that nothing went or that we get caught out of position”
“Cath (Cheatley) did a monster lead out for me again. Kelly (Benjamin) was in second and then me. Coming into the second to last corner, Kelly moved over and I got a nice run because there was a small gap. I was able to just nail it through that last corner. It was a perfect run for me.”
“We have a good chance with Andrea (Dvorak) tomorrow for the GC depending on how the race goes and how her legs are feeling and so we wanted to make sure that we were there and ready to jump on everything after those sprints. It was an awesome stage win.”
Jen Purcell (Danbury Audi). “I saw one to go and I wanted to be third or fourth wheel ideally but I was second wheel pretty much the whole last lap. I knew this was a gamble because the rider in front of me could pull off and I would be stuck in the wind. I had confidence in the last lap of a crit. I feel I can hold on long enough to see it through. Coming into that last turn I had the gut feeling to jump, but I hesitated for a split second. Theresa went. It was as if she sensed my hesitation. As soon as she jumped all I could do was race.”
