With a brilliant lead out from teammate Cath Cheatley (Colavita Forno D’Asolo), Theresa Cliff-Ryan easily won the bunch sprint finish at the City of Beaumont Circuit Road Race. Today was stage one of the Redlands Bicycle Classic. She won ahead of Christina Gokey-Smith (Rouse Bicycles), who finished in second, and third place Jennifer Purcell (Danbury Audi). The women completed three laps of 38km for a total of 115km in a stifling 90 degree heat.

Leaders jerseys were also handed out today. Amanda Miller (HTC Highroad) leads in the QOM competition and will wear the Red Mountain Jersey. Gokey with her second place finish captured the Green Sprinter’s Jersey and Amber Neben (HTC Columbia) will remain in the Yellow Jersey as the GC leader.

Tomorrow’s Beaver Medical Group Criterium course is a flat 1.0 mile course with 9 turns at different angles including all four corners of one intersection. There will be several sprint point and time bonus opportunities during the race. The women will compete in a 60 minute timed race.

Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Colavita Forno D’Asolo). “The heat definitely played a role today. If you did not drink enough you would have been suffering. It was hot there and it was a longer race than yesterday. You are out in the heat longer. Our team did really well. We drank. We talked through the race. We made a plan coming into that last lap. I was not feeling the best on the climb. We had a rider stick with me to make sure I got back into the finish group at the end so that I could sprint. We also had our GC riders watching the front. We covered both bases. It worked out perfect for us today.”

“There was a lot of changing on that last little short straight. Teams were rolling each other. Cath and I got stuck in the middle. With 150 meters before the turn there was an opening. I yelled, “Cath out!” and she jumped out. She lead me through the last corner. I was able to get the prefect lead from her. I surprised myself. This was my first win of the season.”

Christina Gokey-Smith (Rouse Bicycles) “I was on Theresa’s wheel coming into the turn, I should have stayed on her wheel but I did not want to break so I unfortunately went wide into the wind. That’s okay though I still have tomorrow.”

“I think the team will try to defend the jersey (Green Sprinter’s Jersey) tomorrow. We will go out and be aggressive. Hopefully I’ll be there at the end. I have a great team to help me. I do want to thank them for getting me into the Green Jersey today.”

Amber Neben (HTC Highroad) “Obviously we wanted to keep things close and give Chloe (Hosking) a chance to sprint for the stage. That would protect the GC and we could go for the stage win. It was a bit of a mess at the end. Evelyn (Stevens) and I went a bit hard at the end. Alison Starnes (Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY12) was off the front at the second to last climb. We got a sign from the moto that she was still a minute up the road at that point. I was comfortable sitting on Chloe’s wheel but we could have gone a bit easier there and saved the legs of our sprinter. We did not do a good job with the lead out but our goal number one was to defend the jersey. We did that and we are very happy. We’ll get the other stuff dialed in. Also need to acknowledge my teammates Katie (Colclough), Ally (Stacher) and Amanda were fantastic today. Katie and Ally were up front pretty much the whole day. They were awesome.”

Amanda Miller (HTC High Road) “We decided I would go for the QOM, so that we would have someone in the front just in case there were attacks and counter attacks after the QOM, That was my job. The first sprint had Dvorak (Colavita), Powers (TIBCO) and Farina (Rouse). That group kept going for it. I would attack at the bottom of the dip. We’ll see if we will work to keep this jersey on Sunday. The Sunset Loop is pretty hard. I don’t know if my team will have me waste my energy for the points or just wait until later when it’s more active.”
