On a tough a five-kilometer uphill Sun Time Trial, former UCI World Time Trial Champion, Amber Neben (HTC Highroad) threw down the gauntlet with a solid win. This was her 5th career Redlands Prologue win. Teammate and current US Time Trial Champion, Evelyn Stevens was eight seconds behind in second. Team TIBCO-To The Top’s Erinne Willock finished only five seconds behind Stevens for a solid third place. Today’s 90-degree hot temperature may have been a factor as times posted today were slower than last year.

Neben will wear the yellow GC leader’s jersey tomorrow at Stage One, the 115 km City of Beaumont Circuit Road Race. Santa Ana winds have been forecasted. We look forward to a windy day of racing.

Amber Neben (HTC Highroad). “I think the heat must have affected us since the times a re much slower than last year. My power numbers were a little better but it was just a slower day for whatever reason. I am quite comfortable on my time trial bike. I like to ride my time trial bike on this course. It’s an 11-minute effort so it’s a Max VO2 and it hurts the whole time and you really have to hang on at the end. I did an OK job of that today, Evie had a good ride and I think Amanda had an alright ride too.”

“Anytime you can have more than one person who can win the race, tactically it gives you more options. Tomorrow you are not locked in to just one person. Everyone here is riding really well. It should be good. It will be a fun race because we have more people who could win it. We’re not really set on any one person to win it. The cool thing is that we just want to win. At the end of the week we just want to have the yellow jersey.”

“I think this year it’s going to be a challenge because the talent is pretty spread around this year. Peanut Butter has a strong team with Kristen and there is TIBCO. Erinne is riding so strong right now and she has great support this year, really smart riders. Mara (Abbott) is always a wild card. She can climb and get out there. She’ll have a bit more freedom because she does not have a team. Cheatley and Dvorak on Colavita are so talented. It’s just going to be a challenging race. We will have to be smart.”

Evelyn Stevens (HTC Highroad). “I can tell you one thing…I am excited to have Amber as my teammate. I love having Amber as my teammate. Amber is just one of the classiest members of the peloton. With American women there is a lot of competition, but with Amber she just takes you under her wing. She teaches you how to be a better rider. I have always benefited from riding with Amber. She is one of the best time trail riders in the world and she shares how she does it.”

“I just came from Europe so there is a little jetlag going on. Ally Stacher did some research on juicing to help with the jetlag. So I have been eating my juicing concoction for jetlag. I need to credit Ally for that.”

“I think it’s going to be interesting. There is a lot of strength spread across the peloton. I think we are very lucky because we have so many options to play on our team. ”

Erinne Willock (Team TIBCO-To the Top). “It’s a good prologue for me. It will be fun to battle the HTC Highroad riders. Those guys always race really well. I am going to keep trying to get a podium spot. We may move up from third….you just never know.:

Lisa Hunt, Director Sportif (Team TIBCO-To the Top). “I was confident that Erinne would get the podium. She just rode up that hill and we were so excited for her. It will be challenging race. HTC has a strong sprinter in Chloe (Hosking) and will try to gooble up some time bonuses. I think Peanut Butter will be aggressive and will try to move Kristin (Armstrong) up by taking time bonuses. We have seen that Kristin can sprint when she has a strong team behind her. We always want to move up but we will take things one day at a time. We have a very strong team.”
