Continuing where they left off last year, the HTC-High Road women took control of the San Dimas Stage Race by taking the top 2 in the opener, the Chaffey Auto Body Mountain Time Trial. Former Time Trial World Champion and 2000 overall SDSR winner, Amber Neben clocked the fastest time of 15:09 over the 6 km (3.74 mi) uphill course. Twelve seconds slower was her teammate Amanda Miller who’s been on a tear this season.

“Any time you have to throw down a fifteen minute effort, it’s hard,” Neben said. “Plus it’s March and it felt like it! But I had a good ride and we as a team are happy with things, it’s great to have my first win with HTC.”

Returning back from a retirement which included a baby, Olympic Gold Medalist Kristin Armstrong (Peanut Butter & Co.TWENTY12) was 18 seconds slower.

Though the HTC Women have won the overall for the past three years and have a strong squad, they’ll be under attack from many fronts. Armstrong’s team has 4 riders in the top 10,  TIBCO/To The Top, 2 and Colavita/Forno d’Asolo also 2 riders including NRC winner Cath Cheatley.

Tomorrow brings the 90 km (56 mi) San Dimas Community Hospital Road Race, 8 laps of the 11.2 km (7 mile) rolling loop, with a slew of time bonuses for a total of 50 seconds spread out over 3 HotSpot Sprints and at the finish.  Seven riders are divided by less than 50 seconds. It’s on!

“We have our work cut out for us tomorrow and Sunday, it should be an aggressive race,” Neben predicts, ” But it’s really good to have two cards up front, I am very confident in the team.”

At play tomorrow will also be the QOM jersey with 3 opportunities to get points, and the Sprint jersey with 3 intermediate HotSpots and points at the finish.

The racing starts at 10:10am – follow @podium_live for updates.
