Good news. Not only has the Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove received a UCI rating of 2.2 for the men’s stage race but the organizer has added an NRC stage race for the women too. In previous years, the race offered two crits, not on the NRC, for the pro/1/2 women as part of their pro/am schedule.
The 6th annual Alexian Brothers Tour of Elk Grove is set for Friday-Sunday, August 5-7, in the Chicago suburb of Elk Grove Village, Ill, and features 15 pro/am races and a total prize purse of more than $150,000.
“We’re thrilled with UCI’s recognition,” says Elk Grove Village Mayor Craig Johnson in a release. “It speaks highly to how Tour of Elk Grove has firmly established itself within the global cycling community. It will also bring the international spotlight, and more world-class cyclists, to the Midwest.”
The race becomes the 8th stage race for both men and women on the 2011 NRC.
“We’re proud to now be holding 3-day, 3-stage NRC races for both men and women.” added Mayor Johnson.
With flat as a pancake courses, a short time-trial, this one is for the sprinters. In 2010, Jonathan Cantwell (Fly V Australia) won two stages and the overall while Karl Menzies (OUCH-Maxxis) took the overall in 2009. (Read photos, videos and race reports from 2010 and 2009).
Stages. As crits are not allowed in UCI races, traditional final stage – a criterium – has been replaced by a circuit race. The other stages are the same as last year.
The race starts with a 7.2km (4.5mile) time trial with five turns and a long finishing straight on late Friday afternoon.
Saturday brings the 150K (93mile) road race. The riders do 10 laps of the 15.6km (9.7mile) circuit with 26 turns each – for a grand total of 260 turns, and some are tight. The circuit is entirely within Elk Grove Village, on both residential and commercial streets.
The race ends with a 101km (63mile) race or 10 laps of a 10.1km (6.3mile) circuit with 12 turns, and several long straight sections. The course is again on residential and commercial streets of Elk Grove Village.
Other Tour of Elk Grove weekend activities include an on-site sports/vendor expo, community races, activities for kids, and community block parties on Friday and Saturday nights with food, live music and fireworks.
Tour of Elk Grove is presented by Alexian Brothers Medical Center, a nationally acclaimed health care facility in Elk Grove Village.
