19 Teams For Amgen Tour of California

Posted on 17. Mar, 2011 by in news

Finally, the 19 teams were announced for the Amgen Tour of California today. The list included the 18 teams already leaked to the race media partner, cyclingnews, earlier this year and one late addition: Movistar, the UCI Continental team out of Colombia and feeder team for the Movistar Pro Team.

One can assume that the late addition was due to the new UCI rule 2.1.007 bis which specifies that the 3 UCI Continental teams leading the UCI America Tour must be invited to any UCI America Tour race. Movistar is currently leading the UCI America Tour standings.

Also at 152 riders (19 teams of 8 riders) total, the 5th edition of the race will bring the largest field ever assembled. The inaugural field of 18 teams in 2006 was reduced to 17 for both 2008 & 2009 and decremented again in 2010 to 16 teams.

The UCI 2.HC Amgen Tour of California will be held May 15-22, 2011.

The 19 teams are divided into 9 Pro Teams, 4 Pro Continental teams and 6 Continental teams with 5 registered in the US. Last year, the race had 7 Continental teams with 5 registered in the US. With three teams, Team Type 1, UnitedHealthcare and SpiderTech moving up to Pro Continental teams and Fly V Australia’s troubles, the door was open to a return for Jamis/Sutter Home and the first-time participation for Kenda/5-Hour Energy Pro Cycling p/b Geargrinder.

The other UCI Continental teams registered in the US are Chipotle Development Team, RealCyclist.com, Team Exergy, Trek Livestrong U23 and Wonderful Pistachios. The one team who has expressed disappointment in not being invited is RealCyclist.com.
