Ina Teutenberg (HTC-HighRoad) out sprinted Pascale Maria Schnider (RED Team) and Lauren Tamayo (Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12) on a rainy Almond Blossom Road Race, the final stage of the MERCO Credit Union Cycling Classic. Teutenberg attempted to break from the Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12 controlled peloton in lap two but Tetrick Starnes took matters in her own hands and marked the German sprinter’s attacks.
Alison Tetrick Starnes (Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY12) captured the Merco Cycling Classic overall title ahead of Schnider who captured a time bonus at the finish line and moved up into second place. Starnes teammate, Kristin McGrath in third place overall.
Teutenberg also won the Sprint/QOM competition while her teammate Amanda Miller took home the white jersey of the U26 classification.
Ina Yoko Teutenberg (HTC-HighRoad). “We just wanted to race aggressively. Ali (Starnes) (Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12) was out there. Amanda (Miller) (HTC Highroad) tried to counter. We were off the front and normally it would have been a good break but Peanut Butter was closing the gap. I am sure they were worried that if she punctured she would be eliminated. They did a good job. They had everything under control. It was a very good weekend for us. We won three of the four stages. I can’t really complain.”
Alison Tetrick Starnes (Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY12). “The team was altogether today up front controlling the race. They kept things manageable. Definitely kept me safe. The team secured our jersey by keeping the threats away. This is my first GC win in my professional career and I don’t really feel that it’s only mine. I really feel that it’s an overall team win. I have been a domestique and have ridden for many riders. I needed to be there for my team and it was definitely a team win.”
About the Ina Teutenberg attack. “When Ina went Pascale jumped on her wheel and it was over a little roller. I knew I needed to get on that so I jumped and bridged up to them. I was pretty isolated at this point but my team brought me back to protect me. It was very comforting to see some familiar faces after riding alone with Ina.”
