Starnes, Vennell easily win the Merced Boosters Time Trial

On a relatively flat 12 mile course, Alison Starnes (Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12) and Jeremy Vennell (BISSELL Pro Cycling) both easily powered to win the time trial stage of the MERCO Credit Union Cycling Classic. The course included a long hill that proved to be a challenge for most of the riders. Both Starnes and Vennell used the hill to gain time on their competitors.

With the stage win, Starnes was able to overtake Amanda Miller (HTC Highroad) and became the new GC leader. Molly Van Houweling (Metromint Cycling) finished in second place and Pascale Maria Schnider (RED Racing) in third. Miller remains the leader in the Under-26 classification.

Vennell’s win secured yet another all BISSELL Pro Cycling podium. In second was teammate Andy Jacques-Maynes and in third was Ben Jacques-Maynes. With his win, Ben Jacques-Maynes will ride with the GC leader’s jersey in tomorrow’s Downtown Grand Prix.

With his 1th place, CalGiant’s John Bennett remains in the Under-25 white jersey.

Alison Starnes (Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12). “The course was pretty straight forward…out and back. It was relatively flat with some rollers. It was a pretty steady effort with no recovery. I knew it was going to hurt regardless. It was a pure power course….a beautiful course. It had a nice pavement…very straightforward. I honestly never had such fast equipment before. Pearl Izumi got us these skin suits, which are legitimately the fastest skin suits and my bike had these incredible Zipp wheels. I never sliced through the air like that before. It was an incredible feeling. I felt pretty confident and fast coming to the finish line. I felt really good and in a lot of pain.”

When asked about being the new GC leader. “I really don’t feel like I am leading this stage race right now. I feel like my team is leading the race. I had eight of the strongest women in the field helping me and protecting me yesterday. Some of our riders are very strong TT’ers and they sacrificed themselves for me. They had confidence in me and I have never been so humbled by the power of my team.”

Jeremy Vennell (BISSELL) “The course felt really tough….really challenging. There was no real wind factor. The hills were not too steep but very long. That’s where you pick up the time. It was a nice course today. I hoped I might of won but I was not sure because I did not feel too fast. I put my head down the last 3km and powered it. I knew I went fast but I also knew that my teammates are very good TT’ers. Having an all BISSELL podium is such a great way to start the year.”
