Amanda Miller (HTC-Highroad) sprinted to a win at Stage 1 of the MERCO Credit Union Cycling Classic. This new 58-mile Merced Immigration District Road Race  had challenging climbs and a very tough uphill finish. Miller’s teammate Ina Teutenberg attacked early on and stayed clear for almost the entire stage allowing Miller to remain fresh for the uphill sprint. Finishing in second was Flavia Oliviera (Wells Fargo) and in third was Alison Starnes (Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12). Tomorrow’s stage is the Merced Boosters Time Trial. (Time Trial Start Times (P1-2-3 Women) (.pdf))

Miller also won the QOM/Sprint jersey and the U26 jersey.

Amanda Miller (HTC-High Road). “We really didn’t have a game plan. We were just playing off the other riders since we only have three people here. Ina (Teutenberg) attacked and stayed off for 4 laps, which was perfect because it allowed Ally (Stacher) and I to hang out and save energy. Ally and Ina did a great job of keeping the pace high in the last 15K. Attacks were going on and we knew the finish would be hard. Before we got onto the straightway, Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12 attacked and split the group. They were leading out Ali Starnes for the win. When Ali attacked I was able to get between two Peanut Butter riders and get on her wheel. I jumped around her with 200 meters to go. It was good.”

Flavia Oliviera (Wells Fargo). “Ina is amazing, I was afraid that she was going to take the race altogether, she just took off, she put a massive attack. I actually tried to go with, me and a couple of girl but she puts the pedal to the metal man, I’m a little pee-wee against the wind (laughs), so she took off and stayed away. She got about 1:50, almost two minutes on us, and Peanut Butter TWENTY12 just took charge of the race. The KOMs continued with surges up the climb and eventually on the last lap we caught them and then it was just massive flurries of attacks. It was pretty animated. One girl from Vanderkitten tried a solo attack but she got caught, HTC-HighRoad then went to the front and took charge, setting up for Amanda Miller who did a phenomenal job, she was also active in the race. They were just super-strong, it was fun.”

About the final lap. “Peanut Butter TWENTY12 went to the front again and tried to set up for McGrath and slowly but surely everybody just got popped off the back and there was a select group, a few surges there from [Kristin] McGrath and Amanda [Miller]. Carmen Small and Megan Guarnier were up there to represent TIBCO, they did great too. But at the end, Alison [Starnes] tried to lead out McGrath, she had a mechanical problem, she had put a big big effort there at the end. It was fun, it was good race, we’ll see tomorrow.”
