Craig Claims First Even Cross Single Speed Title

Dressed in what he called his single-speed shorts, daisy duke style, 2008 mountain bike Olympian Adam Craig (Rabobank Giant) blew away the competition in front of his hometown crowd to earn the first-ever singlespeed national title. Third-place finisher Aaron Bradford (Specialized-Onsite Ultrasound) rode out front for the first couple of laps before Craig was able to create a gap and grab his first ‘cross Stars-and-Stripes jersey in style. J.T. Fountain (3Fcx-Cycloracing.com) gradually surged late in the race to earn the silver medal.

Craig loved the conditions on Friday. “Less watery than it was yesterday, I just rode a lap yesterday, it was good. It’s going to be a good race on Sunday for sure.”

And he had two reasons to race single speed. “Because it’s a good time and I am so tired of riding the trainer and riding in crappy weather that I’d rather just have someone say go and get a workout that I wouldn’t otherwise get so this is perfect. Single-speed doesn’t tire you out too much because you’re kind of spun out. It felt good and it’s good to get fast laps on the course, now I don’t have to pre-ride at all.”

Craig will be one of the rare Elite riders to have actually raced on the course before Sunday’s Elite Men Championships. He thinks the course suits Bend-local Ryan Trebon (Kona). “There are more straightaways this time, I think Ryan stands a better chance, it’s a faster course and a little longer. It would be cool if Ryan could do it, we’ll see what happens. ”

As far as his chances, he smiled and said “If I’m on the podium I’d be pumped, you never know what can happen in races, I’m relaxed and realistic. ”

Craig is known for having a good time racing but he replied with a laugh when asked if he had any beer handups during the race. “Nobody was in a place that you could actually take a beer and actually drink it without getting it into your nose.”
