It was a long time coming and a hard-fought duel to the heart pounding end for Jeremy Powers (Cannondale p/b Cyclocrossworld.com) but he pulled out the overall win at the Greenware Gran Prix of Cyclocross along with 4 individual USGP wins. Earlier this year, I asked him, repeatedly, if he could chase down his teammate for a win. While we talking Nationals at that point, the same question did apply on the final day of the USGP where he was engaged in a battle to the finish line with his teammate Tim Johnson. We got the answer on Sunday: a definite yes.
Powers changed his schedule, including adding breaks, in order to focus on two major goals of the US Cross season, the USGP and the US National Cyclocross Championships. After never making it to the overall podium, he made it to the top step this year and now it’s time to get ready for the second one. The Elite Men will battle it out once again, in what should be a no-holds barred battle on Sunday in Bend, Oregon for the Stars and Stripes.
Minutes after the podium ceremony on Sunday in Portland, still wearing the USGP leader’s jersey and a crown, Powers talked about what the win meant to him and the decisive moments of the race as we huddled around a heater.
