The only thing that is certain at the end of the Canadian Cyclocross National Championships this Saturday in Toronto is that the Maple Leaf will be changing shoulders in the Elite category with both defending champions skipping the race. 3-time Cross Canadian Champion Geoff Kabush (Rocky Mountain-Maxxis) is recouping from his mountain bike season while Alison Sydor retired from competitive cycling.

In last year’s race held in Edmonton, the weather was definitely a factor, riders were faced  with temperatures dipping to -6 C (21 F), a windchill factor making it even colder, a snow covered track that turned icy in spots as more and more riders rode over it and intermittent snow squalls. This year, it should be somewhat better as occcasional snow showers mixing with rain in the afternoon are predicted with a high of 41F.

The absence of the two defending champions will open the door to last year’s runner up Derrick St.John (Garneau-Club Chaussures) and Mike Garrigan, the 2007 National Champion in Men’s Elite. Riders to watch include Aaron Schooler (Team H&R Block) who finished 3rd last year, Craig Richey (cyclocrossracing.com p/b Blue) who was quite strong in last weekend’s Beacon Cross and HPCX races and roadie Hugo Houle (Garneau-Club Chaussures).

2008 champion Wendy Simms is back and will be fighting to regain the title. Natasha Elliott (Garneau-Club Chaussures) will also be looking to finally take home the Maple Leaf but has she recovered completely from her illness? Other riders to watch include Pepper Hartlon (Team Alberta) who finished second last year and has also been racing in the US to fine-tune her form and Catherine Pendrel (Luna).
