It was a day for solo wins at the Big Shark Bicycle Company – St. Louis Hills Park Crit on Saturday, second of four days of crit racing at the THF Realty Gateway Cup in St Louis, Missouri.
The women’s field was strung out on the first lap of the 45 min (+5 laps) around another wide-open 1.3 mile 4-corner rectangle course around Francis Park. Riders were off the front in multiple attacks and trying to get the cash primes with Carrie Cash Wootten (Team VBF), Jacquelyn Crowell (Team Type 1) and Rachel Heal (Colavita/Baci) snagging the money. Yep, that is DS Heal racing with the squad for the first time this season. A small 3-rider break was barely off the front with 6 laps to go when a $200 prime closed things down at the front. Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom) won the dash for the money and Kristin Sanders (Colavita/Baci) launched her attack. With 4 laps to go, Sanders had 15 seconds on the field and she was off, building her gap up to nearly 40 seconds with 2 to go.
Sanders had plenty of time to enjoy her win. Lauren Hall (Team VBF) took the bunch sprint for second ahead of Vzerniauskaite. Vzerniauskaite remains the omnium leader with only one point on Hall.
Once again, over 100 riders lined up in the men pro/1 field for the 75 min (+5 laps) crit at the end of the afternoon. A few primes and 5, then 11 riders were off the front. The break included Nick Coil (TradeWind Energy/Trek Stores), USA National Pro Crit Champion Daniel Holloway (BISSELL), NUVO/Cultural Trail teammates Jonathan Jacob and Eric Young and the Kenda p/b GearGrinder duo of Rob White and Jim Stemper, Alex Wieseler (ISCorp Cycling Team) and USA National Masters 40-44 Crit Champion David Henderson.
Though organization in the break was not great with omnium leader Holloway in the move, the gap grew to 25 seconds on the field. A few chase groups tried to bridge up but never made it. With 5 laps to go, the gap was hovering around the 30 seconds mark with the break down to 8 riders. Jacob pulled away from the disintegrating break in the final lap for the win. Henderson was second at 8 seconds back just ahead of Young. Holloway finished fourth and keeps the leader’s jersey.
The racing continues with the Giro Della Montagna, the longest standing bike race in the St Louis area. In the heart of the City’s Italian neighborhood, the racers face a four-corner rectangle with finish in front of St. Ambrose church. To celebrate its 25th year, the neighborhood organization Hill 2000 is providing an additional $2,500 in prize money to be used specifically for the Giro. The pro/1/2 women start at 4:30pm CT for 45 min (+5 laps), followed by the pro/1 men at 5:50pm who race for 55 min (+5 laps).
