On a clear, beautiful Marin afternoon, Kat Carroll (Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY12) broke off from the main field early and soloed to win the San Rafael Twilight Criterium.
“This is my hometown race,” stated Carroll. “It was fantastic. The crowd was awesome. I was hearing my name all around the course.”
Six riders were able to get a 15 second break early in the race. Carroll was joined by Megan Guarnier (Team TIBCO/To The Top), Tyler Stewart (Luna), Mary Elizabeth Maroon (Touchstone), Olivia Dillon (Peanut Butter & Co TWENTY12) and Emily Kachorek (Wells Fargo). The break was slowly brought back together when Carroll attacked and launched herself off the front.
“It was a strong break and some of the strongest women in the race was in that move but it doesn’t matter if nobody really wants to pedal,” said Carroll. “When I saw the group was about to catch us I knew that it was a perfect time to go. I had no idea that there was that much left in the race. I was hoping that someone would come up with me. I just put my head down and rode.”
Carroll was out in front for about 25 laps, easily over half of the race.
“Every time I came around I was hoping to see 8 or 9 laps to go. When they finally did show it I thought it was a bit of a joke. I was impressed with the field. I had to work the whole time. I thought there was a real good chance that I would be brought back with two laps to go.”
“Olivia was the consummate teammate. I knew that she would not allow anyone to get up the road. If it did come back together, I knew she has a pretty good sprint and she would have a good shot at it.”
“I just wanted to make sure that nobody went up to her,” added Dillon. “Kat is capable of staying out there by herself. We just covered all of the moves. Kat had the great legs and the strength to stay out there.”
Carroll’s teammate Hanan Alves-Hyde sprinted to a third place finish.
“We had been in the break with Kat before,” commented second place finisher Maroon. “We were hoping that we would get some help chasing her down. When that didn’t happen we just had our designated riders hold back for the field sprints. There were two of us looking to sprint today. We saved ourselves for the end and hope we get on the podium.”
“I didn’t know I had it until going up the hill with two to go,” stated Carroll. “I felt pretty strong. The field can sometimes give up. I got lucky with that.”
