The USA Cycling 2010 National Racing Calendar continued over the weekend with the 51st Annual Fitchburg Longsjo Classic, the 15th of 24 events. The race included two road races, a criterium and an individual time trial. The event honors Fitchburg native Art Longsjo, the first American to participate in both the Summer and Winter Olympics in the same year. Longsjo competed in cycling at Melbourne and speed skating at Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy, in 1956.
Not only did Cath Cheatley (Colavita/Baci) won the overall but she also won two stages and finished second on the other two. Her teammate Rushlee Buchanan finished second overall and Bron Ryan (Verducci Breakaway Racing) was third. On the men’s side, David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit Strategies) took the overall ahead of Jay Thomson (Fly V Australia) and Jeremy Vennell (Bissell Pro Cycling).
In the women’s overall NRC standings, Cheatley jumped from sixth place overall to overtake Alison Powers (Team Vera Bradley Foundation) for the top spot in the individual competition. Team Vera Bradley Foundation continues to lead the team contest with Colavita/Baci jumping to second place from fifth.
Luis Amaran (Jamis Sutter Home/Colavita) extended his lead in the men’s individual NRC overall standings, while Scott Zwizanski (Kelly Benefit Strategies) leapfrogged Rory Sutherland (UnitedHealthcare p/b Maxxis) for second place. Veilleux makes his appearance in fourth spot. Amaran’s team, Jamis Sutter Home/Colavita continues to lead the men’s team competition ahead of UnitedHealthcare p/b Maxxis with Kelly Benefit Strategies moving up one spot to third.
