Another stage, another GC leader for the men at the Fitchburg Longsjo Classic. Former New Zealand National TT Champion Jeremy Vennell (BISSELL) clocked the fastest time of 17:31 in stage 3, the Courtyard by Marriott Fitchburg South Street Time Trial. He set an average speed of 30 mph over the out-and-back 8.7-mile course. In second and third place, are Fly V Australia teammates former South African Time Trial Champion Jay Thomson at 3 seconds and Darren Rolfe at 4 seconds down.

Moving into the yellow jersey is multi-time U23 Canadian National TT Champion David Veilleux (Kelly Benefit) who finished sixth on the stage at 11 seconds down. Thomson moved up to second spot at 5 seconds and Vennell now sits in third at 6 seconds.

Yellow jersey into the stage Aurélien Passeron (Garneau Club Chaussures) finished 8 seconds down but incurred a 20-second penalty for ‘Unintentional detour of the circuit constituting an advantage’ (UCI Rule 12.2.1.040.15). He now sits in fourth place. The first yellow jersey of the race, stage 1 winner Alejandro Borrajo (Jamis/Sutter Home) was also given the same penalty.

The overall winner will be decided on the final stage, the Workers’ Credit Union Criterium raced on a 0.9-mile loop with 3 corners through historic downtown Fitchburg. Time bonuses of 10, 5 and 3 seconds are on the line at the finish. Last year, Zach Bell (Kelly Benefit) overcame a 6-second deficit to snatch the overall from leader Tom Zirbel, then riding for BISSELL. The battle starts at 3:50pm where the men race 55 laps for 50 miles.

Shanks Fastest. Alison Shanks (New Zealand National Team) was the fastest with a time of 19:57 over the same distance as the men with an average speed of 26 mph. Yellow jersey Cath Cheatley (Colavita/Baci), also of New Zealand, came in second at 12 seconds down. In third, was American Amber Rais (KUOTA Speed Kueens) at 16 seconds down.

Cheatley still leads the general classification which she took over on the first stage. Buchanan moved up to second place at 1:11 and Bron Ryan (Verducci Breakaway) is in third at 1:19.

The racing concludes on Monday with the Workers’ Credit Union Criterium where the women race 28 laps on the 0.9-mile course for 25 miles total starting at 2:30pm.
