The men’s portion of USA Cycling 2010 NRC continued on Sunday June 27 with the 49th Annual Chevron Manhattan Beach Grand Prix, the 14th of 24 events on the schedule. Chevron has sponsored the Grand Prix for 30 years, and large crowds lined the the demanding 1.4-mile course, which included a hill with a grade of 7% in the first turn and a 300-meter sprint to the finish.
The race quickly split, with a 10-man group breaking away from the field for a 90-second gap. The United Healthcare p/b Maxxis team led an effort to close the deficit, and came within 30 seconds of the leading group. Yosvany Falcon (Bahati Foundation) won the sprint, followed by Bernie Sulzberger (Fly V Australia) and Diego Yepez (Unattached).
No changes to the top 5 of the NRC Standings. Luis Amaran (Jamis Sutter Home-Colavita) maintained his lead in the men’s individual NRC overall standings, while his Jamis Sutter Home-Colavita squad still topped the team competition. Since the women’s competition in Manhattan Beach was not a part of the National Racing Calendar, their leader boards remain unchanged. Alison Powers (Team Vera Bradley Foundation) sits atop the women’s individual rankings, while her Team Vera Bradley Foundation is leading the team contest.
