Reijnen wins overall in Thailand

The last two stages of the UCI 2.2 Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn ’s Cup Tour of Thailand can be briefly summarized by one word: break. Breaks that make it to the line and riders that make or miss the break.

By finishing second in stage 4, the longest stage of the race at 207.3 km, Kiel Reijnen (Jelly Belly p/b Kenda) had increased his lead to 21 seconds going into the two final stages of the race.

Heat over 100° F and strong crosswinds challenged the riders on the rolling 190.3km stage 5 from Mugdaharn to UbonRatchthani.  A 4-man break which became three riders got away from the field  and managed to say away from the Jelly Belly-led chase. Kohei Uchima (Japan National Team) took the win ahead of Bradley Hall (Marco Polo Cycling Team) and Alexandr Dymovskikh (Kazakhstan National Team). Reijnen came in part of a 11-man chase group 50 seconds later which dropped him down to 4th place on GC at 19 seconds down.

On stage 6 another break made it to the line but this time, Reijnen was part of the group that escaped late in the 186.3 km stage, and the yellow jersey was not. The break crossed the line 56 seconds ahead of the chase group, with Reijnen taking 6th place, a big enough gap for him to claim the overall win.

Parno (Custom Cycling Club) outsprinted his breakmates for the win. Neil Shirley (Kelly Benefit Strategies) finished second and Deon Locke (CKT TMIT-Champion System) third.

“The Jelly Belly P/B Kenda boys put the smack down and in doing so put pressure on the leader from Japan. With 20 KM to go Kiel put himself in a breakaway group of nine and stayed away until the finish and made up his 19 seconds and won the overall.” wrote Jelly Belly DS Danny Van Haute.

In the final GC, Reijnen finished 18 seconds ahead of Nicholas White (Medscheme Cycling Team) and 19 seconds on  Locke. Shirley finished fourth overall at 23 seconds down.
