Stevens Wins Stage and Helps Teammate Teutenberg Defend GC Leader’s Jersey

On a very difficult Sunset Road Race Stage, Evelyn Stevens, Ina-Yoko Teutenberg, and the HTC-Columbia team held off numerous attacks from the entire field. The battle ended with a stage win for Stevens and the overall leader’s jersey for her teammate, Teutenberg.

“It was a really hard day,” commented second in GC Kat Carroll (Peanut Butter & Co. TWENTY12). “Hats off to HTC-Columbia because we threw everything we could at them today.”

“We did not initiate anything,” said Teutenberg. “We just wanted to control it. The good thing is the smaller attacks we did not have to bother with because we knew that Amber (Neben) (Dare to be-BMW-Bianchi) and Mara (Abbott) (Peanut Butter &Co. TWENTY12) were just going to reel them in at the hills. They both were going full out every time. It was just a matter of me holding on.”

With three laps to go, a potentially dangerous break developed. A five-rider breakaway that included GC rivals Neben, Abbott, Meredith Miller (Team TIBCO), Katheryn Mattis (Webcor Builders) and Alison Powers (Vera Bradley Foundation) was off. Stevens proceeded to put her head down, close the gap, and led Teutenberg back up to the group.

“Evelyn did a great job reeling them all in on the last three lap,” added Teutenberg. “It was all Evelyn at the end and she deserved the stage win. I was suffering and the group attacked on the steep part. I didn’t have the legs anymore and Evelyn rode a tempo that I could do. Evelyn reeled them all in at the end. It was pretty impressive. It was quite a sight from the back to see Evelyn go…and no one could catch her. Especially after how much work she did.”

“We got the group together near the end and I heard Ina yell, ‘Evelyn Go!’”, said a very excited Stevens. “I thought, why not. I’ve worked so hard up to now why not try to win too. It was awesome. We kept Ina in the leader’s jersey, which was the most important thing today. Today was hard. Mara and Amber are great climbers. Ina told me to stay with her and we pulled it up every time. You work with someone like Ina…she is the best…you want to give your all for her. This is the first win for me. It feels amazing and even more amazing because the team won as well.”

Carroll also had impressive assistance from her Peanut Butter & Co teammates all afternoon. They were very aggressive in defending Carroll’s overall position. “I can’t say enough about how great Mara rode,” commented Carroll. “Yesterday after the crit, we were in a really good position with me in a good GC position. We had a rider who could really excel in a course like today and we really wanted to play that card. It was in our best interest to put a lot of pressure on HTC-Columbia. Evie and Ina were able to handle it, especially in the last three laps. I am psyched to be riding on a team that has so many weapons. I can’t wait until our other girls come back from Track Worlds because I think we will be a really dynamic squad.”

Also active this afternoon were the Vera Bradley Foundation riders. Not only were they able to get Alexis Rhodes onto the overall podium, but also successfully defend the mountains jersey and win the team overall classification.

“We knew when the KOM were,” commented Powers about the team’s objectives. “We wanted to come out of this with at least the mountain jersey. Later in the race, as the selection happened, there were three of us in the break. There was a good chance that Alex would be moved up onto the (GC) podium. We pretty much dropped the sprinters. Since there were three of us, we tried to do something and make the others work. That is when I attacked in the last lap. I think I had 40 seconds at one point, but I was dying. I was pretty tired. Once I saw that it was Amber, and I knew she was near Alex, I decide I needed to just sit so that we didn’t move Amber ahead of Alex. It was a really aggressive race today, and probably the most aggressive Sunset race I have ever done. This is my third time. We wanted to be aggressive and I think we did a good job.”

“This is amazing,” added DS Lisa Hunt. “This is really a dream for us to win the team GC and to get a rider on the podium for the overall. For the first year of this team, I am very excited. To keep the climber’s jersey and to move our rider to the GC podium was our goal. This has been exciting.”

“It was a great day,” said third place GC finisher Rhodes. “I had two other team mates in the top 10. The team winning the team GC was unexpected but we do have a strong team. Now we are really looking forward to Gila.”
