Some of the best women cyclists will be competing over the Labor Day weekend in St. Louis, MO at the Tour of Missouri Women’s Series. The women’s series will be featured at the THF Realty Gateway Cup, which is now a four day event. The last stage is being held on Monday, September 7th and will conclude prior to the start of stage 1 of the Tour of Missouri. The first stage will be held late Friday, September 4th.
Racing this year will be double US National Champion, Brooke Miller (Team TIBCO). Miller won the inaugural Tour of Missouri Women’s race in 2008. Past stage winner and the 2007 Overall Women’s Champion, Kelly Benjamin (Colavita/Sutter Home) will also be racing with current US Professional Criterium Champion Tina Pic (Colavita/Sutter Home) and sprinter Laura Van Gilder (Mellow Mushroom).
“Last year, the Tour of Missouri was a great race,” stated Miller. “It was a great course , a great atmosphere and the crowds made it one of the most exciting races that we did last season. We are really thrilled to be able to take part again this and defend our title.”
“The Tour of Missouri Women’s Series is one of the best supported races in the country,” commented Pic. “We really feel like grand tour riders when we come here.”
Professional teams participating this year will be Team TIBCO, Colavita/Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light, Team Type 1, LipSmacker, Team ValueAct Capital, Vanderkitten Racing Team, Proman Women’s Cycling Team, and Webcor Builders Cycling Team.
Representing the Elite and Regional teams will be Team Sugar CRM, DFT p/b Treads Women’s Cycling Team, Alan Factory Team, Athletes by Design (ABD), Team Kendra Tire, Mercy Racing Team, Team Revolution, Team BH, Alderfer, Michelob Ultra/Big Shark Racing, and Mesa Cycles Racing Team.
One of the more interesting events being held during the Tour of Missouri women series happens Sunday night, September 6th. The women’s series will have a panel of top women cyclists who will share their unique experiences and anecdotes. The event is free to the public. Some of the confirmed panelists include Carrie Cash (founder, Team Revolution), Karen Brems (Webcor), Kristin Sanders (ValueAct Capital), Kori Seehafer (Team Type 1), Jessica Prinner (SBD) and Tina Pic (Colavita/Sutter Home). Stage 1 – Tour de Lafayette presented by Studio 2108 is a night time criterium with lights. It is a fast, flat, and wide-open .9 mile course and the racing starts at 8:30 pm.
Stage 2 – St. Louis Hills Presented by Big Shark Bicycle Company is raced on a 1.3 rectangle course, starting at 3:30 pm. For the first time the historic St. Louis Hills neighborhood is host to the stage of the Gateway Cup. This district is known for its wide, tree-lined streets.
Stage 3 – Giro Della Montagna presented by Specialized Bicycles will start and finish in front of St. Ambrose Church. Starting at 4:15 pm the riders will race through the heart of the City’s Italian neighborhood.
Stage 4 – Tour of Missouri Pro/Am presented by Greenstreet Properties. Riders will race a section of Stage 1 of the Tour of Missouri professional cycling race, a sweeping downtown circuit. This stage is the grand finale of the Tour of Missouri Women’s Series and will close out the Gateway Cup. The racing starts at 11:45 am.
