One race completed in the extravaganza that is Superweek or officially the Point Premium Root Beer International Cycling Classic / SuperWeek Pro Tour. The longest-running multi-day bicycle race in the United States started yesterday July 10th and ends on July 26th with races throughout Eastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.
The Superweek Pro Tour consists of 17 races (13 crits, 4 road races) for the Po/1/2 Men with a daily purse of $2,500m a $5,000 purse for the overall omnium win, $3,000 for the APC Nutrition Sprint Competition p/w The Protein People winner and $3,000 for the Otoo Wenz Sr Best Overall US Amateur winner. For the Pro/1/2/3 Women, the Superweek Pro Tour consists of 14 races (12 crits, 2 road races) with a daily purse of $850, $2,000 for the omnium overall winner and $1,000 for APC Nutrition Sprint Competition p/w The Protein People winner.
During the event, the omnium leader wears a yellow jersey, the sprint leader receives a red jersey and the daily race winner gets a white jersey.
The series started off with the Beverly Hills Cycling Classic presented by Vee Pak/Beverly Bike & Ski in Chicago. After 40 hours of travel time, arriving only the morning of the race, Australian Crit champion Bernie Sulzberger (Fly V Australia) won out of a 12-man break, with his teammate and 2008 overall winner Jonny Cantwell taking 3rd. In 2nd was Chad Burdzilauskas (Kenda). Garmin-Slipstream Hans Dekkers earned the red points jersey. (Read full race report over at Chicago Bike Racing).
“With two of us in the lead group of 9 we had the advantage over the others.” said Sulzberger. “Jonny covered the moves for me towards the end and all I had to do was to wait for the right time to start my sprint.”
Team Fly V Australia for Super Week also includes Ben Kersten, Alessandro Bazzana and Curtis Gunn. Who else is racing? No riders list is availableDekkers was joined by his teammate Ricardo Van der Velde. No riders list is available but Jelly Belly, Rock Racing, BISSELL, GearGrinder, Kahala LaGrange and Puerto Rico Cycling Team have been announced for the men’s races.
In the women’s events, Colavita Sutter Home p/b Cooking Light, Lip Smacker, Team Ultra Link Riders, Dolce Vita Cycling, Hub Racing and Velo Girls will all be present.
