Déjà vu at the 66th annual Tour of Somerville on Monday as not only did Colavita/Sutter Home once again do a clean sweep but managed to put the same riders, Tina Pic and Sebastian Haedo, on the top step as last year.
With two teams having their sponsors located in New Jersey, the battle was set between Colavita/Sutter Home and Team Type 1 around the flat and fast 1.25-mile (2km) 4-corner course. The battle started in the women’s 20-mile Mildred Kugler Women’s Open with riders from the Australian National team and Verducci-Breakaway also getting into the mix, throwing in moves, but the group stayed together and it all came down to the expected field sprint.
Pic launched her sprint from the final corner and crossed the line ahead of Theresa Cliff-Ryan (Verducci-Breakaway) and Laura Van Gilder (C3-Sollay). Claiming victory in 2000, 2006, 2008 and this year, Pic is only the third woman to win four times at Somerville in the 30-plus year history of the race.
“We always race to win,” said Pic in the team report. “But the Tour of Somerville is special. Our sponsors are here to support us and we want to do our very best for them.”
The battle continued in the men’s 50-mile Kugler-Anderson Memorial. With other squads such as USA Crits Speedweek winner Team Mountain Khakis, Kelly Benefit Strategies and CRCA-Empire p/b Northwave also in the house, attacks flew from the gun.
Riders tried to jump from the high speeds generated by the hunt for primes but time and time again, everything was shut down.
The speed didn’t let up and increased for the final 5 laps where as more attacks flew with riders tring their last moves but it all came back together as the lead out trains took over and kept on pushing the speed.
In the penultimate lap, 5 The Team Type 1 riders came to the front with the Colavita/Sutter Home train on its heels but they were swarmed in the back straight.
Haedo jumped just before the final corner to take the win besting Jake Keough (Kelly Benefit Strategies) and Aldo Ino Ilesic (Team Type 1).
