Last Friday, cyclists, friends and family gathered at the Hellyer Velodrome for a night of ‘glam rock’ racing under the lights and to support Ashleigh Jackson on her road to recovery. The 24-year old Ashleigh, a member of the Alto Velo cycling team, was the victim of a hit and run driver on Sunday April 19 2009. She was riding around 5:30pm when a late-model silver BMW drove up from behind on struck her on Highway 9 and Fruitvale Avenu in Saratoga, Califormia. Jackson’s boyfriend, David Nelson said the car’s mirror clipped Jackson and knocked her to the ground.
“I have third nerve cranial palsy (brain damage) the nerve looks healthy but it takes 2-4 months for a non-working nerve to die, I may never use my left eye again. About a week ago I could feel my legs, my right leg still feels like its sleeping ‘pins and needles’ so its all nerve damage. 3 broken ribs, they healed no problem, a broken clavicle. I can’t walk in a straight line because I have no depth perception and double vision. In 6 months to a year, they will operate on my eye, just cosmetic, I may never regain real sight.” – Ashleigh Jackson reports on her injuries
