The longest-running multi-day bicycle race in the United States, the 41st annual Point Premium Root Beer International Cycling Classic / SuperWeek Pro Tour will take place from July 9th-26th, 2009 with races throughout Eastern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois.
After taking a hiatus of two years to construct the Manpower Corporate Headquarters on the site, the Schlitz Park Cycling Classic is making a return to the SuperWeek Race Calendar. This race, known as one of the country’s hardest one day races, features a course that includes leg wrenching climbs, fast descents and tight turns. In the men’s pro crit, riders crawl past the spectators 88 times over the 2nd Street Hill climb where thousands of fans arrive hours earlier to get the finest seats.
A new race is joining the schedule, The Elgin Cycling Classic run on the same course as the Elgin Road Course which in the year 2000 was a showcase for U23 riders. Both Danny Pate and Charles Dionne claimed victory on the road course. After a 6 year break, the race is back and opened to all riders, and in recognition of the U23 roots, the City of Elgin will present a separate trophy and prize to the top U-23 riders in the Pro field.
Seventeen days of racing and three road races so far. Director of Operations, Andy Garrison, told Chicago Bike Racing that he’s still working on a return to the popular Milwaukee lakefront course.
The 2008 edition was a battle between Jittery Joe’s and Rock Racing for the top step of the podium. In the end, the Jittery Joe’s squad claimed the honors as Australian Jonathan Cantwell won the overall ahead of Sterling Magnell and Chad Hartley took the Sprints competition ahead of Rahsaan Bahati.
The women’s pro/1/2 competition which included only 7 events was won by Theresa Cliff-Ryan of the Verducci/Breakaway.
