Tour of California return is iffy for San Diego

Posted on 09. Mar, 2009 by in news

According to the Union-Tribune paper, the return to the San Diego County next year is uncertain due to sponsorship, permitting issues cited by organizers.

The organizers were quite pleased with the attendance but the support from the local government needs work, and Andrew Messick, president of AEG Sports, compared it to the San Francisco fiasco.

“There are places in the state that really want us and they make it real easy for us,” Messick said. “And there are places where it’s a real effort. Historically, it’s been a real effort in San Diego. That just makes it harder.”

The article talks again about the possibility of moving the race later in the year to April, May or June, and that the organizers will consider taking in Yosemite National Park and Mammoth for the first time. Also of note, the 2010 Tour of California schedule, host cities and route will be decided by late June.

I spoke with the CHP liason between the AToC organization and the municipalities/police during this years race. The weather was the biggest headache but the route through the suburbs below Mt Palomar was a big problem. Cole Grade Rd had to be closed most of the day, yet it was the only way in and out for the residents. That isn’t a problem when they are used to the race or fans, but otherwise it can be a big PR hassle.

On the other hand, the crowds were great! Even the costumed antics of the San Diego Tri Club couldn’t ruin the passion of the race fans. (please don’t run beside the riders, especially while dangling your infant !)

I hope they do go back, it will be good to finish on Palomar and then have a separate SD stage the next day. As if this race wasn’t hard enough!
