On tap this weekend: ING Direct Capital Criterium in DC – streamed live

On Sunday September 21, the first ever ING Direct Capital Criterium will be held in downtown Washington DC. A surprisingly strong field including Tour of Missouri winner Christian Vande Velde (Garmin-Chipotle) is showing up at the end of the North American road season to compete for the $50,000+ purse with $10,000 earmarked for the pro men’s winner.
But the riders to watch are the fast men such as US Pro Criterium champion Rahsaan Bahati and his Rock Racing teammate Fred Rodriguez, the Kelly Benefit/Medifast squad led by Alex Candelario, Successful Living’s Ricardo Escuela, Team Type 1′s Emile Abraham, Health Net-Maxxis’ Karl Menzies, Time Pro’s Adam Myerson, Elite National Criterium Champion Ken Hanson (Cal Giant Berry) and the Toyota-United duo of Hilton Clarke and Dominique Rollin who is fine tuning his form before the World Championship. Symmetrics’ Eric Wohlberg and Team Type 1′s Shawn Milne should factor in many moves that occur throughout the race as they try to initiate breaks.
Given the fact that many riders are still looking for a contract for next year, the racing should be aggressive.
The men (no women’s events) will race 85 laps on a 6-corner, 1-kilometer course with the start/finish located on Pennsylvania Avenue and includes a sweeping 180 degree turn.
The first of the four races, the 35+ Men race starts off at 8am EST, followed by Men 1/2/3, Kids race to culminate the day with the Men’s Pro Invitational at 11:30am EST (8:30 am PST).
The race will be streamed live from the DCVelo site.
